Handling Controversy Like a Soldier of the Cross

The latest media blitz on the GQ interview with Duck Dynasty star Phil Roberson has enraged many on both sides. One side cries free speech suppressed, the other, hate speech propagated. A&E has suspended Phil and A&E has gone into the usual hyper-tolerance stance for those whose values are, well, made of rubber but who also want to make sure the profits keep rolling in. A&E has every right to act according to their contract with Phil and I am sure Phil, armed with high paying lawyers, will make them step appropriately. Phil seems to be taking it well and like a Christian should take it. I support everyone’s right to free speech and also support business’s right to make adjustments per legal agreements. Many times I do not LIKE either, but must live with it.

Many Christians are up in arms and demanding that A&E reinstate Phil. We have every right to do this also. I would think that the appropriate action if we, as Christians, really mean what we say is to give A&E a few days to think it over and if we are still incensed at A&E’s actions to CANCEL our subscription with A&E and tell them (or our cable dealer) exactly why we are cancelling. This is what I plan on doing; however it is a free choice for all.

I, however, do not see this as a great big deal. Do we as Christians think the world agrees with us? Do we believe the world is going to be happy when we stand for God’s Truth? Have we actually read the Scriptures and what they say about all this? “Beloved think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you. But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.” 1Peter4:12-13.

It would seem we should be rejoicing that we have a Christian with national exposure who is actually suffering for the sake of the gospel (though his suffering is not like a Christian in the Sudan would suffer). This actually shows there is a real difference in what we believe and what the world believes. We should graciously attempt to exercise our rights, however we should see the anger of the world as a sign that we actually stand against it and not with it. There seems to be a line being drawn in the sand between the true church and the rest of the world today. This is only God’s Word coming to fruition. These things will get worse and worse we are told, however, instead of being the angry people demanding protection from a humanistic political front, we should look towards our Savior and count it all joy for the sake of the gospel. Knowing that this is a sign we are His. “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death.” Phil. 3:10. If we have truly died to ourselves and have been resurrected with Him, we gave up our “rights” at the Cross.

  1. Right on Pastor.
You’re the main reason Beve and I attend Woodland Baptist because I know the truth is being told and you’re not afraid to speak out on matters that concern us.
Most modern day Christians in America don’t have a clue as to what real suffering for Christ is.
We seem to forget that we are strangers passing through in God’s time table and all of us are being tested so that we might grow in wisdom and knowledge as God perfects us as real born again Christians. As Paul says in Php 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
Thanks again for you perseverance in the truth.

    God Bless,
    Jerry and Beve
